GAME NOTES

ST. PETER, Minn. – The Gustavus men’s basketball team is set to return to Gus Young Court Wednesday evening for a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference matchup against Augsburg University, looking for the series sweep. The Gusties (9-6, 7-3 MIAC) and the Auggies (11-4, 6-4 MIAC) are set to tipoff at 7 p.m.

The Series

Wednesday’s game marks the 181st meeting between Gustavus and Augsburg on the hardwood, with the Gusties holding a 109-71 advantage in the all-time series. The Gusties are currently riding a four-game winning streak against the Auggies and are in search of the series sweep, previously defeating Augsburg 64-62 Dec. 6 in Minneapolis, Minn.

Last Time Out

The Gusties went 2-1 last week with three conference road games, winning at Macalester and Saint Mary’s prior to a 62-72 loss at Bethel University, snapping a three-game win streak. Despite outscoring the Royals 29-28 in the second half, Gustavus was unable to come back from an 11-point halftime deficit.

Zach Bloemker (Fy., Marshall, Minn.) helped lead the second half comeback effort, shooting a perfect 8-8 from the free throw line to finish with 10 points off the bench. Kelsey Thomas (Sr., Wiesbaden, Germany) led Gustavus with 15 points off of 7-12 shooting, followed by 12 points from Riley Sharbono (Jr., Marshall, Minn.).

About the Auggies

Augsburg recently had its five-game winning streak come to an end versus Bethel University last Wednesday and followed that with another setback versus Saint John’s University, falling 75-85 against the Johnnies, who sit atop of the MIAC standings. The Auggies have accumulated the most points in the MIAC, totaling 1,138 poitns on the season, averaging 75.9 per game (3rd/MIAC). Senior forward Collin Olmscheid leads Augsburg with 18.4 points per game (2nd/MIAC) while leading the league with 107 field goals made and 276 points.

  • The Gusties matched their win total from last season with the Dec. 6 victory at Augsburg.
  • The Gusties rank first in the conference in three-point field goal defense, limiting its opponents to a 30.8 percent mark from beyond the arc, while ranking second in scoring defense, allowing 65.8 points per game.
  • Riley Sharbono leads the the MIAC with a 68-for- 81 clip from the free throw line, despite going 0-0 from the charity stripe at Bethel.
