GAME NOTES

ST. PETER, Minn. – The Gustavus men’s hockey team is set to head back into Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action this weekend with a series against the University of St. Thomas. The Tommies (7-5-1, 2-1-1 MIAC) hosts the Gusties (6-6-3, 5-1 MIAC) on Friday prior to Gustavus hosting St. Thomas Saturday.

Last Time Out

The Gusties wrapped up their non-conference schedule last weekend with a 4-0 loss at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and a 3-1 loss at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls. Jake McCann (Sr., Shoreview, Minn.) scored the sole Gustie goal of the weekend in the third period at UWRF on Saturday.

Scouting St. Thomas

The Tommies closed out the 2017 calendar year on a four-game winning streak prior to going 1-2 in three recent non-conference games, falling 3-1 at Nichols, winning 8-0 versus Connecticut College, and most recently dropping a 3-2 decision at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls on Tuesday. Sophomore forward Johnny Panvica leads the Tommies, ranking among the top-five scorers in the MIAC with 15 points (7g-8a). The defense is bolstered by junior goaltender Benjamin Myers has started in 11 of 12 games, ranking second in the conference with a 1.81 goals against average and a .932 save percentage.

Goaltending Consistency

The Gustie netminding duo of Chris Amsden (Jr., St. Peter, Minn.) and Robbie Goor (Fy., Anoka, Minn.) have continued to be a steady presence, each sharing time in goal. In five starts, Goor has allowed nine goals and ranks atop of the MIAC with a 1.75 goals against average. Amsden has started in nine games and owns a .921 save percentage (4th/MIAC) and a 2.30 save percentage (7th/MIAC).

Gustavus Notables

  • First-year forward Caleb Anderson (Sioux Falls, S.D.) leads the MIAC in freshman scoring and is tied for the team-lead with nine points (4g-5a).
  • Anderson is tied for the lead in Division III with two shorthanded goals. The Gusties scored one shorthanded goal all of last season.
  • Anderson is tied for the lead in the conference with two game-winning goals.
  • Evan Erickson (Jr., Woodbury, Minn.) leads the Gusties with five goals (T-9th/MIAC).
  • After two consecutive series sweeps over Hamline and Bethel, the Gusties surpassed their win total from the 2016-17 season.
  • The last time Gustavus strung together two-straight series sweeps was during the 2013-14 season, while the back-to-back shutouts is the first time since 2008.
  • 17 different Gusties have found their way into the goal-scoring column through 15 games this season.
  • The Gusties have outscored their opponents 22-11 in the second period.
