GAME NOTES

ST. PETER, Minn. – The Gustavus men’s basketball team is set to continue Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play, heading to St. Paul, Minn. Wednesday evening for a 7 p.m. tipoff at the University of St. Thomas. Riding a five-game winning streak and a 4-0 start to conference play, the Gusties own a 6-2 overall record, while the Tommies have dropped three-straight and are 3-4 overall and 1-2 in the MIAC.

The Series

Wednesday’s game marks the 191st meeting between Gustavus and St. Thomas on the hardwood, with the Tommies holding a 116-74 advantage in the all-time series. St. Thomas owns a five-game winning streak over the Gusties currently, coming off a series sweep last season over the Black and Gold with 85-63 and 59-57 victories.

Last Time Out

The Gusties earned their fourth consecutive conference victory last Saturday at Gus Young Court, defeating Hamline University 65-59. Trailing by four points at halftime, Gustavus opened the second half on a 21-8 run and maintained the lead for the rest of the game. A collective effort guided the Gustie offense. Jason Faul (Sr., Prior Lake, Minn.) and Riley Sharbono (Jr., Marshall, Minn.) led the Gusties with 13 points each, while Sharbono was perfect from the charity stripe and led the team with seven rebounds. Vannis Smith (So., Crystal Lake, Ill.) followed with 10 points, along with Zach Bloemker (Fy., Marshall, Minn.) collecting nine, and a season-high eight from Schuyler Thompson (Sr., Milville, Minn.).

About the Tommies

St. Thomas most recently fell 71-57 at the No. 10-ranked University of Wisconsin-River Falls on Saturday, its third-straight loss, dropping its overall record to 3-4 on the season. The Tommies opened conference play with an 80-71 win over Concordia College prior to losses at Hamline University and Bethel University. The Tommies are led by senior foward Ryan Boll, who ranks third in the MIAC with 18.4 points per game and second with 11.4 rebounds per game.

  • The Gusties matched their win total from last season with last Wednesday’s win at Augsburg.
  • The 4-0 start to conference play is the best since the 2014-15 season, in which Gustavus began MIAC action with a 5-0 start.
  • Gustavus ranks atop the conference in three-point field goal defense, limiting its opponents to a 26.6 percent mark from beyond the arc.
  • The Gusties rank second in the MIAC with 39.6 rebounds per game.
  • Kelsey Thomas (Sr., Wiesbaden, Germany) leads the Gusties with 7.6 rebounds per game, ranking fifth in the MIAC.
  • Riley Sharbono earned his first career MIAC Player of the Week accolade after averaging 17.5 points per game last week.
    • Sharbono leads the the MIAC with a 46-for-53 clip from the free throw line.
    • Sharbono has scored in double figures each game this season, ranking second in the MIAC with 131 points.
