ST. PETER, Minn. – The Gustavus men’s basketball team is set for its 2017-18 home opener, hosting Buena Vista University for a non-conference matchup. The Gusties (1-1, 0-0 MIAC) will tip off against the Beavers (1-1, 0-0 IIAC) at 5:45 p.m.

The Series

Tuesday’s game marks the 18th meeting between Gustavus and Buena Vista on the hardwood. The Gusties hold a 10-7 advantage in the all-time series. The Black and Gold opened its 2016-17 season at Buena Vista, falling 81-60 against the Beavers in Storm Lake, Iowa.

Last Time Out

The Gustavus men’s basketball team tipped off its 2017-18 campaign over the weekend in Chicago, Ill. at the North Park University Invitational. The Gusties dropped their season opener in overtime by a score of 70-66 against the Illinois Institute of Technology prior to an 85-73 victory versus Blackburn College on Saturday.

Gustavus shot 27-for-60 for a 45 percent field goal percentage while going 6-for-18 from beyond the arc in its season opening loss versus Illinois Tech, led by a 16-point performance from Riley Sharbono (Jr., Marshall, Minn.). Three other Gusties tallied double-digit performances. Jason Faul (Sr., Prior Lake, Minn.) went 6-8 from the field with 15 points, followed by 11 points from Vannis Smith (So., Crystal Lake, Ill.) and 10 from Kelsey Thomas (Sr., Wiesbaden, Germany).

A 23-0 run to open the second half led the Gusties to victory over Blackburn on Saturday. Kelsey Thomas led the way for the Gusties, shooting 8-for-10 from the field and 2-for-2 from beyond the arc with a double-double of 23 points and 12 rebounds. Three other Gusties added double-digit point totals. Vannis Smith tallied 13, while Zach Bloemker (Fy., Marshall, Minn.) posted 12 and Riley Sharbono notched 11.

About the Beavers

Buena Vista opened its 2017-18 season last week, defeating Bethany Lutheran College 85-82 prior to a 93-72 loss against the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. Through two games, the Beavers have averaged 78.5 points per game along with a 46.8 field goal percentage and 32.5 rebounds per game. Senior guard David Jeffries leads the team with an average of 16.5 points per game, shooting 57.9 percent from the field, including a 4-4 mark from beyond the arc.
