NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Gustavus men’s and women’s cross country teams competed at the NCAA Central Region meet Saturday, hosted by Carleton College. The women’s team posted a sixth place finish out of 32 teams, while the men took 12th out of 29. Sadie Klug (Sr., Waseca, Minn.) led the women with a 15th place finish earning All-Region accolades, crossing the line in a career-best time of 22:26.5, which is tied for the 20th best 6K time in program history. Andrew Stumbo (Fy., Boone, Iowa) paced the men’s squad, finishing in 38th place with a time of 26:03.9.

“We knew that is what Sadie was capable of,” Head Coach Brenden Huber said. “Excited to see her have the best race of her career on the biggest stage. We’ll know tomorrow for sure, but she should be a national qualifier. And Andrew got some experience on what it takes to be a top runner in the region. He learned quite a bit today. Not what we had hoped but still a solid effort from a first-year.”

* Update: Klug will compete at the national meet, which takes place at 12:15 p.m. Saturday in Elsah, Ill., hosted by Principia College.

Loras won the men’s competition with its top three runners taking fourth through sixth place, while the women’s team competition was won by host Carleton, featured by the individual champion and runner-up.

Here’s how the rest of the Gusties finished:

“We were the fifth team in the conference to finish in a tight field after taking eighth at the conference meet,” Huber said. “That was one of our goals today, to finish fifth among our conference. To accomplish that is really exciting to see. It was our best race at the right time. We peaked today and they gave everything they had today.”
