ST. PETER, Minn. – Gustavus women’s tennis player Briana Hartmann (Jr., Owatonna, Minn.) won the ITA Midwest Regional singles championship Sunday with a convincing 6-1, 6-1 decision over Jillian Wallace of UW-Whitewater. Hartmann and Wallace both earned upset victories to reach the title match as each was seeded in the Nos. 9-16 slots. As one of eight region champions, Hartmann captures the 41st All-America award in the history of Gustavus women’s tennis and first since 2011 when three Gusties were named All-America (Sam Frank, Marianne Barau, Megan Gaard).

“Bri played unbelievable today,” Head Coach Jon Carlson said. “She was very sharp mentally and was great in chasing down balls. She executed her game plan perfectly. It was great to have the whole team there as well. I think the cheering actually had an impact on the overall result.”

Hartmann won the regional title with victories over Gabby Ferro of Cornell (6-0, 6-0), Julie Martin of UW-Whitewater (6-7(3), 6-4, 10-8), Milica Cvrkota of Grinnell (4-6, 6-1, 6-1), Laura French of Coe (6-3, 6-4), Alex Talyansky of UW-Whitewater (6-2, 6-3), and finally Wallace (6-1, 6-1).

Hartmann advances to the ITA Oracle Cup, which is Oct. 11-15 at Berry College in Rome, Georgia. There she will compete in an eight-player field to determine a national champion.
