ST. PETER, Minn. – The Gustavus men’s soccer team continues Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play as they host Carleton College Saturday afternoon at Gustie Soccer Field for a homecoming matchup.

The Gusties enter today’s match with a 2-7-1 (1-2-1 MIAC) record, while the Knights own a 4-2-2 (1-1-1 MIAC) record. The game is scheduled for a 3:30 p.m. start.

Gustavus earned its first victory in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play Tuesday in dramatic fashion, defeating Saint Mary’s 1-0 in double overtime. The Gusties improved to 2-7-1 overall and 1-2-1 in the MIAC, while the Cardinals dropped to 5-4-0 overall and 2-2-0 in the league. Matt Murakami (Jr., Eden Prairie, Minn.) scored the game-winning goal 1:55 into the second overtime off a corner kick. Matt Ouren (So., North Mankato, Minn.) played the ball in from the right corner and Henry Brose (Sr., Hudson, Wis.) had the first touch on a header, where the deflection went to Murakami for the goal, giving the Gusties the sudden death victory. Gustavus was unsuccessful in scoring on its first eight corner kicks, but made the final one count. Saint Mary’s had just two corners throughout the contest.

Today’s match marks the 42nd meeting between Gustavus and Carleton College. The Gusties own a 25-9-7 all-time record over the Knights. Last season, Carleton took down Gustavus by a score of 3-0 in Northfield, Minn.

Carleton is coming off a 4-1 victory over Bethel University on Tuesday. Senior midfielder Riley Phelps is the MIAC leading scorer with seven goals and three assists, including two game-winners.
