Krasaway, Sonnesyn Named April Student-Athletes-Of-The-Month Posted on May 2nd, 2016 by

ST. PETER, Minn. – Senior golfer Andrew Krasaway (Hermantown, Minn.) and senior distance runner Marit Sonnesyn (Plymouth, Minn.) have been selected as the Gustavus Adolphus College April Male and Female Student-Athletes-of-the-Month, presented by Thrivent Financial and voted on by the Gustavus Sports Information Department.

Krasaway turned in an impressive month to round out the spring season. The senior golfer helped guide the Gusties to three meet championships and one top-five finish at a highly competitive invitational. Krasaway started the month with a 12th place finish out of 70 golfers at the Camp LeJeune Invitational with scores of 76-71-72 (+5). He then tied for third place out of 68 golfers at the Augsburg Spring Invite with scores of 71-78 (+5) as the Gusties took first place out of seven teams. The following weekend, Krasaway tied for 21st out of 81 at the lone home meet of the season – the Bobby Krig Invitational. Gustavus took first out of 14 teams as Krasaway tallied scores of 75-76-76 (+15). Krasaway saved his best performance for last as he rounded out the month with a first place finish out of 109 golfers at the Saint John’s Invitational. He posted a first round score of 65, which tied the program’s lowest round score. The Hermantown native then shot consecutive rounds of 71 to finish seven under par. Although it doesn’t fall under the month of April, Krasaway also took first place in a dual meet against St. Thomas on Sunday with round of 73 (+1). Krasaway finished the month of April earning MIAC Golfer of the Week twice.

Women’s Outdoor Track & Field

Major: Biology

Hometown: Plymouth, Minn.

High School: Wayzata

Sonnesyn made her presence known both on the medal stand and in the Gustavus record books in April. The Wayzata product started the month with a ninth place finish in the 5k at the Hamline Invite. Her time of 18:16.12 was the second fastest among Division III runners in the event. Sonnesyn then claimed gold in the 5k at the Saint John’s/Saint Ben’s Invite with a time of 18:27.34. Her best performance of the month came at the UW-La Crosse Phil Esten Challenge as she set a new school record in the 10k with a time of 36:10, breaking the previous mark by more than 30 seconds, while also taking first place in the event. At the time of the meet, her time of 36:10 ranked eighth in Division III and is still the fastest time in the MIAC by more than 34 seconds. Her 5k splits of 18:10 and 18:00 were both 5k personal bests, and she was later named MIAC Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week. To finish the month, Sonnesyn claimed another gold, this time in the 1500-meter, at the Drake Alternative in St. Peter. She ran the race in 4:53.63.
