Oskaloosa, Iowa – The Gustavus Adolphus softball team capped off its weekend trip to Iowa with a pair of wins over the University of Dubuque on Sunday afternoon at Lacey Park. The Gusties earned the sweep via 8-4 and 16-4 wins to improve to 10-8 overall heading into conference play. Gustavus will travel to St. Joseph on Thursday, April 2 for a doubleheader against Saint Ben’s beginning at 3:30 p.m.

Game One Recap

All eight of Gustavus’s runs came courtesy of Kaitlyn Bicek (Jr., Northfield, Minn.). Bicek belted out a pair of grand slam home runs, the first tied the game at 4-4 in the bottom of the fifth and the second gave Gustavus the walkoff 8-4 win in the bottom of the eighth.

Bicek finished the game 3-for-4 with two runs and eight RBI. Her two homers ties Gustavus’s school record while her eight RBI sets the new program standard.

Carly Klass (Sr., Richfield, Minn.), Paige Breneman (Sr., Sherburn, Minn.), and Hannah Heacox (So., Stillwater, Minn.) all posted two hits in the game.

Heacox picked up her second straight win (2-1) after allowing four runs (three earned) on 13 hits to go along with 13 strikeouts. It is the second time this season that the sophomore has struck out 13 batters.

Game Two Recap

With a 1-0 lead after a one-run first inning, Gustavus broke the game open with 10 runs on five hits in the top of the third. From there, the Gusties added two runs in the fourth and another in the seventh.

Gustavus got 12 hits from 10 different players led by Jena Willis (So., Glacier, Mont.) and Amber Hoffman (Jr., New Prague, Minn.). Willis went 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI, and Hoffman went 2-for-2 with one run. Bicek, Breneman, and Sarah Rozell (Sr., Lakeville, Minn.) all finished with two RBI.

Picking up the complete-game win was Rozell who improves to 2-5 with the victory. She allowed six runs (five earned) on 11 hits with seven strikeouts.
