Bloomington, Minn. – Gustavus senior distance runner Caitlin Fermoyle (Mendota Heights, Minn./Henry Sibley) had found plenty of triumphs in the 3,000-meter run this season, so she decided to increase her distance but didn’t have to sacrifice any success. Fermoyle was victorious in her first time running the 5,000-meter run last weekend at Saint Benedict’s CSB Invitational. For her performance, the MIAC sports information directors honored Fermoyle Wednesday with the MIAC Women’s Indoor Track Athlete-of-the-Week award.

Despite it being her first attempt at the 5K, Fermoyle rose to the challenge and broke 18 minutes on her way to victory in the race. She finished first at the CSB Invitational with a winning time of 17:59.95. That time currently ranks fourth in the MIAC this season, and she’s only one of four MIAC runners to finish a 5K in under 18 minutes. Her win at Saint Benedict comes on the heels of winning the 3K in each of her previous two meets, and Fermoyle currently holds the MIAC’s No. 3 time in the 3K with her season-best showing of 10:20.79.

The Gusties and Fermoyle have just one more opportunity to prepare for the 2015 MIAC Indoor Track and Field Championships, which will be held at Concordia College in Moorhead, Minn., on March 6-7. Gustavus will close the regular season Friday with a trip to the metro area to compete in the Kilt Classic, which will be hosted by Macalester College in St. Paul at 5 p.m.
