St. Peter, Minn. – The Gustavus Adolphus men’s swimming and diving team suffered a dual loss by the score of 219-75 to UW-Stevens Point on Saturday afternoon at the Vic Gustafson Pool. The Gusties recorded two event wins and a total of 12 individual event top three finishes.

“Another week of close, competitive races,” said head coach Jon Carlson.  “We got beat by depth and out-touched in a few races but I’m pleased with our overall performance.  The swims at the top were very competitive and that’s encouraging to see this early in the year.”

Leading the way for the Black and Gold was Zac Solis (Sr., Centennial, Colo.) and Jacob Stern (Jr., Rosemount, Minn.) who provided the Gusties’ two wins. Solis took gold in the 1,000 freestyle with a time of 10:09.60 and also added a runner-up finish in the 500 free with a time of 4:52.92. Stern specialized in the breaststroke races where he out-touched the field in the 200 with a time of 2:16.41 and finished second in the 100 with a time of 1:01.20.

Dante Colucci (Jr., Summit, N.J.) and Kurt Youngdahl (Sr., Deephaven, Minn.) both provided Gustavus big points with a pair of runner-up finishes each. Colucci swam the backstroke races and finished second in both the 100 (55.37) and 200 (2:02.93), while Youngdahl took part in the sprints and finished second in both the 50 free(22.19) and 100 free (48.90).

Other top Gustavus individuals at the meet included Ross Larson (Sr., Brookings, S.D.), Matt Kuckler (So., West St. Paul, Minn.), and Ben Miller (Jr., Des Moines, Iowa). Larson finished third in both the 200 free (1:49.83) and 200 backstroke (2:05.00), Kuckler took third in the 200 butterfly (2:13.26), and Miller finished third in the 100 butterfly (55.72).

The Gustavus swimming and diving team will be back in the pool on Friday, Nov. 14 when it travels to Northfield, Minnesota for an evening dual against St. Olaf College. The meet is set to begin at 6:00 p.m.
