St. Peter, Minn. – The Gustavus Adolphus volleyball team suffered a 3-0 loss at the hands of Augsburg College on Wednesday at Gus Young Court.  From the early goings, Augsburg’s front row was relentless, efficient, and too much to handle for the Gusties.  Gustavus drops to 8-12 overall and 3-3 in the MIAC with the loss, while the Auggies extend their winning-streak to 17 matches and are now 21-2 overall and 6-0 in the MIAC.

Augsburg picked up the sweep via set scores of 25-15, 25-17, and 25-10.

With the score tied at 8-8 in the opening set, Augsburg used a 10-4 scoring run to open up an 18-12 lead.  The closest Gustavus came from that point on was five points, as the Auggies scored five straight to take the opener by 10.

Augsburg took advantage early in the second set, using a 7-1 run to go up 12-5.  Despite scoring four in a row and later six of eight points on two separate occasions, Gustavus could not make up the difference and trailed 20-16 and then 21-17.  The Auggies once again finished strong, scoring four consecutive points to win the set 25-17.

The Auggies wasted no time in the third and scored nine of the first ten points to lead 9-1.  The Gusties brought the score to within five at 12-7, but it proved to be the closest they would come for the remainder of the set.

Gustavus finished with 27 kills and an attack percentage of .118.  The offense was led by Emily Gilman (Jr., Maple Grove, Minn.) and Alyssa Taylor (Jr., Trimont, Minn.) who both recorded six kills.  Gilman hit .125, while Taylor hit .353 with no attack errors.

Augsburg’s offensive was paced by Colleen Ourada and Jessica Lillquist.  Ourada hit the floor with a match-high 13 kills (.429), and Lillquist posted 11 (.286).

Rachel Mazzola (Fy., La Crosse, Wis.) made her first collegiate start at libero and finished with seven digs.  Paige Breneman (Jr., Sherburn, Minn.) was right alongside Mazzola with seven of her own.

Kendra Weege (Jr., Watertown, Minn.) set for the majority of the match and led the team with 13 assists.

The Gustavus volleyball team will be in action this weekend when it travels to Eau Claire, Wis. to take part in the UW-Eau Claire Tournament.  The Gusties will face UW-Stevens Point at 3:00 p.m. and UW-Stout at 7:00 p.m. on Friday.  Head Coach Rachelle Sherden’s club will then close out the weekend against UW-Eau Claire at 10:00 a.m. and UW-La Crosse at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday.
