Alex Kolquist receives MIAC men’s golf athlete-of-the-week honors

St. Paul, Minn. – For the third consecutive week, a Gustavus men’s golfer was honored as the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) men’s golf athlete-of-the-week on Tuesday.  Alex Kolquist (Sr., Hermantown, Minn.) was rewarded the honor following his first place performance at the Frank Wrigglesworth Blugold Invitational last weekend in Eau Claire, Wis. It marks the first time in the history of the award that a Gustie men’s golfer has received the honor three consecutive times.

Kolquist used a first round 73 (+2) on Sunday and a second round 72 (+1) on Monday to total 145 (+3) for the tournament, good enough to earn him the title of champion last weekend.  The senior was one shot off the lead entering Monday’s final round, when his round-low 72 pushed him to a five stroke victory.  It was Kolquist’s first tournament win and third straight top ten finish to start the 2012 campaign.

The Hermantown, Minn. native will take his 73.3 stroke average per 18 holes and join his teammates in the Twin Cities Classic this weekend.  The three-day tournament will kick off at Elk River Golf Club on Saturday at 10:30 a.m.  The competition will then move to the Links at Northfork on Sunday before concluding at Wayzata Country Club on Monday.
