Rookie Becca Woodstra was named to the UW-River Falls Invitational All-Tournament Team following Saturday’s matches.

River Falls, Wis. – The Gustavus volleyball team suffered a pair of 3-0 losses on the final day of the UW-River Falls Invitational held Saturday in the Karges Center.  The Gusties were beaten by UW-Stevens Point before falling to UW-Whitewater to finish the two-day tournament with a 1-3 record.  Gustavus is now 6-6 overall as it heads into the heart of its conference season.

The Pointers cruised to a sweep over the Gusties by scores of 25-18, 25-18, and 25-19.  Becca Woodstra (Fy., Minnetonka) led the Gustavus offense with nine kills (.250), finishing behind UW-Stevens Point’s Christina Brinkman, who registered a match-high 12 kills (.296).

UW-Stevens Point hit at a 27.2-percent rate as a team compared to Gustavus’ 14.5 hitting percentage.

Paige Breneman (So., Sherburn, Minn.) made 12 digs, while Erin Sherman (Sr., Golden Valley, Minn.) and Shelby Nosan (Baudette, Minn.) registered eight digs each.  Kendra Weege (Watertown, Minn.) was Gustavus’ primary setter, distributing 23 assists.

The Gusties fell by scores of 25-20, 25-20, and 25-21 to No. 10 UW-Whitewater in their final match of the tournament.  Woodstra turned in a solid all-around effort with 10 digs and five kills (.143).  Nosan led the Gustavus defensive effort with 13 digs of her own.  Only Kelsey Nobillo of UW-Whitewater had more digs with 14.

The Warhawks finished with 39 kills and an attack percentage of .174.  Gustavus had 28 kills with an attack percentage of .130.  Emily Phillips (Sr., Cleveland, Minn.) tallied a team-high eight kills (.185), as Emily Gilman (So., Maple Grove, Minn.) and Kelle Nett (Fy., Spring Valley, Ill.) both finished with five. Weege went over 20 assists for the fourth straight match, finishing with 26.

Following play on Saturday, Becca Woodstra was named to the eight player All-Tournament Team.  Woodstra completed the weekend with a total of 35 kills and an attack percentage of .212.  She also had 28 digs and four blocks.

The Gustavus volleyball team will be back on the court Wednesday when it travels to Northfield to battle St. Olaf at 7:00 p.m.
