Junior Andrew Oakes won the first tournament of his collegiate career at the Augsburg Invitational this weekend.

Ham Lake, Minn. – The Gustavus men’s golf team registered both a team and individual win at the Augsburg Invitational on Sunday afternoon at the Majestic Oaks Golf Club.  Junior Andrew Oakes (Hermantown, Minn.) recorded the first tournament win of his collegiate career after a strong second round.

After leading on Saturday, the Gusties shot a 297 (+9) on Sunday to total an even 600 (+24) on the weekend; good enough to come away with first place.  Oakes won the individual portion of the invitational after shooting 74 (+2) on the final round.  Coupled with a first round of 73 (+1) on Saturday, the junior finished the tournament with a mark of 147 (+3).

The Gusties used a powerful one-two punch on their way to victory.  Finishing second one stroke behind Oakes was senior Alex Kolquist (Hermantown, Minn.).  Kolquist shot an even par 72 on Sunday to finish with a two-day total of 148 (+4).  The Gustie men also got a key contribution from Tyler McMorrow (Jr., St. Cloud, Minn.), who finished in a tie for fifth with a score of 151 (+7).

“We played well.  We did a nice job of staying out of trouble, which was key for us today,” said Head Coach Scott Moe.  “It was fun to see Andrew get his first win.  He was fired up about it.”

The Gusties will compete in the Saint John’s Invitational next weekend.  A two-day event being held on Saturday and Sunday will take place at two different courses. Saturday will be held at Blackberry Ridge in St. Cloud, and Sunday’s round will take place at Greystone Golf Club in Sauk Centre.

“Next weekend will be good for us,” said Moe.  “It will be the toughest field we will see this fall, so it will be fun for us to go up there and compete.”
