Samantha Opsahl named WIAC Gymnastics Specialist-of-the-Week

Gustavus Adolphus junior gymnast Sam Opsahl (Forest Lake, Minn.) has been named Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Gymnastics Specialist-of-the-Week for her performance at the John Zuerlein Invitational hosted by UW-Stout on Saturday, Jan. 27.

Ophsahl recorded three finishes inside the top-10 at the four-team meet.  The junior broke out with the best performance of her three-year career on the balance beam, scoring a career-best 9.550 to take first place.  Opsahl’s previous high-score on the beam this season came on Jan. 13 when she recorded a 9.150 at the UW-Eau Claire Invite.

To go along with her win on the balance beam, Opsahl also took fifth on the floor exercise (9.400) and 10th on the vault (9.125).  Her 9.400 on the floor was also a season-high.

So far this season, Sam is averaging a 9.119 on the vault, an 8.925 on the beam, and an 8.913 on the floor.  The Forest Lake, Minn. native tallied Gustavus’ first individual event win of the season after landing a 9.300 on the vault in the Gusties’ dual with UW-Oshkosh on Jan. 21.

The Gustavus gymnastics team will be back on the mats Friday, Feb. 3 at the Gershon Invite.  The meet will be held in La Crosse, Wis. and will begin at 6:00 p.m.
