Volleyball Defeats Howard Payne And Westminster In Opening Day Of Pikes Peak Challenge Posted on September 2nd, 2011 by

The Gustavus Adolphus volleyball team is off to a 2-0 start after picking up a pair of wins over Howard Payne University and Westminster College in the first day of the Pikes Peak Challenge held in Colorado Springs, Colo. on Sept. 2-3.  The Gusties defeated Howard Payne 3-1 in the morning and Westminster 3-0 in the afternoon.

The Gusties took the opening set of the season 25-22, yet the Yellow Jackets were able to rebound in the second set by winning 25-20.  With the match tied at 1-1, Gustavus put down the clamps, winning 25-15 in the third and 25-12 in the fourth to win the match.

Gustavus recorded 47 kills in the match with a team attack percentage of .188.  Angela Ahrendt led the way with a game-high 15 kills, finishing the contest with a .481 attack percentage.  Emily Phillips also had double-digit kills with 11.  Malea Noennig notched 36 assists as the primary setter, while Katie Ness recorded a career-high 19 digs.

Gustavus cruised to a sweep in its second match of the day, winning 25-17, 25-17, and 25-18.  Ahrendt paced Gustavus on the attack once again; recording a game-high 11 kills.  Phillips tallied nine kills, while Olivia Warren turned in 13 digs and seven kills.  Erin Sherman joined Warren in double-figures with 15 digs, as Noennig (21) and Kelsey Florian (13) combined for 34 assists.

It is the first time since the 2008 season that the Gustavus volleyball team has started with a 2-0 record.

The Gusties will wrap up the play at the Pikes Peak Challenge with matches against Colorado College at 12:00 p.m. and SUNY New Paltz at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 3.
