Helland, Broderius, and Voss Selected To Compete in NCAA Track and Field Meet Posted on May 26th, 2011 by

Gustavus Adolphus College women’s track and field competitors Janey Helland (Sr., Mapleton, Minn.), Sam Broderius (Sr., Hector, Minn.), and Allyson Voss (So., Wausau, Wis.) have been selected to participate in the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Helland will compete in the long jump and heptathlon, while Broderius will compete in the discus throw and Voss in the pole vault.

Helland enters the national meet ranked third in the heptathlon with a score of 4,735.  She won the MIAC Heptathlon title for the second straight year with a mark of 4,595.  Her NCAA Championships qualifying score of 4,735 came in a fifth place finish at the Drake Relays.  Helland also ranks 14th in the long jump with a leap of 18-8 entering the NCAA Championships.

Broderius, who won the shot put and discus and finished third in the hammer throw at the MIAC Championships, enters the national meet ranked fourth in the discus with a throw of 154 feet, 3 inches, which she recorded at the Drake Alternative meet at Gustavus.  This is the fourth consecutive year that Broderius has qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the discus throw.

Voss, who finished second in the pole vault at the MIAC Championships with a height of 11 feet, 6 1/4 inches, enters the national meet ranked 19th with a height of 11 feet, 7 3/4 inches, which she recorded at the Lee Krough Invitational hosted by Gustavus in April.  This is Voss’s first appearance at the NCAA Championships.

Ohio Wesleyan University will host the Championships Thursday-Saturday, May 26-28, at Selby Field and George Gauthier Track in Delaware, Ohio. A total of 796 participants (398 men and 398 women) will compete in the championships. Student-athletes qualified for the championships by reaching the automatic and provisional standards established for each event.

The competition schedule for Helland, Broderius and Voss is:
Helland competes in the heptathlon beginning at 12:00 pm on Thursday.  She will compete in the 100 meter hurdles, high jump, shot put and 200 meter dash on Thursday.  Helland will also compete in the long jump on Thursday and that begins at 3:00 pm.  Voss will compete in the pole vault at 3:00 pm. On Friday, Helland continues with the heptathlon at 12:00 pm.  The events are the long jump, the javelin, and the 800 meter run.

On Saturday, Broderius competes in the discus throw.  The event begins at 3:00 pm.
