MIAC Honors Six Football Players For Academic Achievement Posted on March 4th, 2011 by

The Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) announced its Academic All-Conference team for the Fall 2010 season on Tuesday, March 1. The list included 26 Gustavus student-athletes.

The Gustavus Academic All-Conference honorees for football include Logan Becker (Jr., Easton, Minn), Brian Grundmeyer (So., Inver Grove Heights, Minn.), Brad Kruckeberg (Jr., Ellendale, Minn.), Gavin Maurer (So., Morgan, Minn.), Paul Stommes (Sr., Richmond, Minn.) and Darin Wagner (Jr., Hayfield, Minn.). The Gustavus football team finished with an overall record of 4-6 and a MIAC record of 3-5.

Becker started all ten games at quarterback, passing for 1529 yards and 12 touchdowns. He was also the second-leading rusher for the Gusties, as he netted 417 yards and five touchdowns on the ground. Becker, a junior nursing major, maintains a GPA of 3.83.

Grundmeyer started ten games at left tackle in the 2010 season. Grundmeyer, a sophomore physics major, was honored during the 2009-2010 academic year with the Harold Q Miller Memorial Award in Physics. He maintains a GPA of 3.64.

Kruckeberg, a 2010 MIAC Second Team All-Conference selection at free safety, led the MIAC in interceptions (6) and passes defended (12) while tallying 54 tackles for Gustavus. Kruckeberg was also named to the D3football.com All-West Region Third Team at the conclusion of the season. A junior biology major, he maintains a GPA of 3.88.

Paul Stommes

Gavin Maurer registered 12 tackles on the season and was a key contributor on special teams for the Gusties. Maurer, an undeclared sophomore, has a cumulative GPA of 3.58.

Paul Stommes wrapped up his career with 82 tackles in the 2010 season, a mark that placed him second on the team. A four-year starter at linebacker, Stommes also tallied two interceptions, one sack, and one fumble recovery. Stommes graduated in December 2010 with a degree in economics and a 3.79 GPA.

Darin Wagner caught 12 passes for 132 yards and one touchdown during the 2010 season. The tight end also served as a key contributor on special teams for Gustavus. The junior biology major has a cumulative GPA of 3.58.

The 2010 Academic All-Conference honorees included 305 student-athletes from the MIAC’s 13 member institutions. To be eligible for the honor, the student must be a sophomore, junior, or senior with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale. Athletically, football, soccer, and volleyball athletes must compete in at least half of their team’s varsity regular season contests. Golfers must be a member of their competing team at the conference championships and cross country runners must finish in the top 50 at conference or be in the top seven of their team at the MIAC Championships.
