Women’s Hockey Completes Sweep Of St. Olaf With 6-0 Victory Posted on November 13th, 2010 by

The Gustavus women’s hockey team remained unbeaten on the young season with a 6-0 win over St. Olaf on a snowy Saturday afternoon in Northfield.  The Gusties led 2-0 after one period and 4-0 through two periods before finishing with the 6-0 victory.  First year forward Melissa Doyle led Gustavus with two goals, while Danielle Justice and Marah Sobczak combined to post the shutout win in goal.

“I was very pleased with the focus of the team with all of the distractions at the beginning of the day with the weather.  We got to the rink late and it could have distracted this team, but it did not.  They just rolled with it at played with great purpose right from the start,” commented Coach Mike Carroll.

The Gusties came storming out of the locker room and controlled the first period out-shooting the Oles 16-2 and taking a 2-0 lead on goals by Meagan Wanecke (power play at 2:59) and Whitney Schaff (7:23).

The second period was much of the same as Gustavus held a 20-3 advantage in shots and pushed its lead to 4-0 on goals by Mollie Carroll (power play at 1:11) and Melissa Doyle (5:00).

Gustavus closed out the scoring with two goals in the first four minutes of the third period.  Doyle picked up her second goal at the 1:50 mark and Kelsey Johnson registered her first goal of the season at the 3:46 mark.  Marah Sobczak replaced Danielle Justice in goal four minutes into the third period and finished with nine saves.

Coach Carroll thought his team bounced back with a solid performance after playing inconsistently on Friday night, “The whole team contributed and we scored some really nice goals.  We played better each period of the series and controlled the game today.”

The Gusties posted their third shutout in four games this season.  Goaltenders Danielle Justice and Marah Sobczak have allowed only one goal in 240 minutes in the  nets.

Next weekend, Gustavus will battle Bethel in a conference series.  Friday night’s game will be played at Gustavus and Saturday afternoon’s finale will be played at Bethel.
