Volleyball Comes Up Short At #14 St. Thomas Posted on October 14th, 2010 by

The Gustavus volleyball team turned in a valiant effort against #14 St. Thomas in St. Paul on Wednesday night, but the first-place Tommies prevailed by a score of 3-1 (28-26, 15-25, 25-13, 25-15).  Dana Boerboom led the Gustavus attack with 11 kills.

The Gusties came out strong in the first set and pushed the Tommies to the limit before falling 26-28.  Down 22-18, Gustavus rallied to tie the score at 23-23.  The set was tied at 24, 25, and 26, before St. Thomas registered two points to win the set.  Nicki Ainsworth knocked down five kills in the set.

With the scored tied 7-7 in the sec0nd set, Gustavus used a 4-0 run to take an 11-7 lead and then pull away for the convincing 25-15 victory.

The third and fourth sets were all St. Thomas as the Tommies took control early in both sets and never allowed the Gusties to get close.

Gustavus, which is now 6-12 overall and 1-6 in the MIAC, will take part in the Simpson Invitational this weekend.
