Men’s Soccer Shuts Out Simpson 3-0 Posted on October 4th, 2010 by

The men’s soccer team continued its fine play with a 3-0 non-conference win over Simpson on Sunday afternoon in St. Peter.  Junior midfielder Doug Frey turned in a strong performance with a goal and an assist helping the Gusties extend their unbeaten streak to five matches .  Gustavus is now 5-3-3 overall on the season.

The match was scoreless through the majority of the first half, but the Gusties struck twice in the final five minutes of the opening session as Chris Adams scored in the 42nd minute off an assist from Frey, and then Frey extended the lead to 2-0 with an unassisted goal with just one second left in the half.

Max Malmquist closed out the scoring for the Gusties as he found the net early in the second half (50:50) with an assist from Ben Ceder.

“It was nice to see us score some goals today,” commented Coach Mike Middleton.  He added, “We continue to play very well. Every player on the squad contributed to this victory and that is always a good feeling.”

Gustavus held a 16-3 advantage in shots and a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks.  Luke Strom (75:24) and Steve Lundberg (14:36) for the shutout in goal.

During its current five-match unbeaten streak, the Gusties have outscored their opponents 12-2 and posted three shutouts.  Doug Frey has led the way offensively as he has totalled nine points in the five matches with three goals and three assists.

Gustavus has a bye in conference play this week and will face Loras College of Dubuque, Iowa in a non-conference match next Sunday in St. Peter at 2:30 pm.
