Women’s Soccer Falls To Saint Benedict 2-0 Posted on September 25th, 2010 by

The Gustavus women’s soccer team lost to MIAC foe St. Benedict 2-0 on Saturday in St. Joseph, Minn.  The Blazers got out to an early lead in the contest, scoring in the third and ninth minute.  Jess Pellegrene and Heather Beshears of Saint Ben’s were credited with the unassisted goals.  The Gusties fall to 4-4 overall and 0-3 in the MIAC, while the Blazers improve to 5-4 overall and 2-1 in the MIAC.

Gustavus registered seven shots in the first half and just four shots in the second for a total of 11 shots in the match.  Saint Ben’s had eight shots in the first half and seven in the second for a game total of 15.  The Blazers held the corner kick advantage in the match 7-to-3.

Gustavus’s Chelsea Bayer suffered the loss in nets, allowing two goals and making seven saves.  Maija Schmelzer was credited as the winning goalkeeper, making four saves on the way to a shutout.

Attacker Ashley Anderson led Gustavus with two shots, as the Gusties finished the match with four shots on target compared to Saint Ben’s nine.

Gustavus will look to get back on track Wednesday when the Gusties travel to Winona, Minn. to take on Saint Mary’s University under the lights at 7:00 pm.
