Three Goal Third Period Allows Women’s Hockey To Defeat Concordia 4-0 Posted on February 6th, 2010 by

The Gustavus women’s hockey team completed an important weekend sweep over Concordia College with a 4-0 win in Moorhead on Saturday afternoon. The Gusties got goals from Alyssa Saunders, Kelsey Kennedy, Tam Meuwissen, and Allie Schwab, while goaltender Danielle Justice recorded the win in the net.  Meuwissen (16:14) and Schwab’s (17:07) goals, which gave the Gusties some breathing room, came less than a minute apart midway through the third period. Gustavus improves to 12-4-2 overall and 8-3-1 in MIAC play.

Alyssa Saunders gave the Gusties a 1-0 lead on an unassisted goal at 3:29 of the first period.

Gustavus maintained its one-goal advantage through two periods of play, but then exploded for three goals in the third period.  Kelsey Kennedy pushed the lead to 2-0 when she beat Cobber netminder Tracy Sklucazek at the 9:35 mark.  Meuwissen made the score 3-0 with a power play goal at the 16:14 mark and then Allie Schwab closed out the scoring with an even strength goal at the 17:07 mark.

Gustavus goaltender Danielle Justice picked up her fourth shutout of the season and moved her season record to 8-2-0.  She registered 21 saves.

The Gusties will host UW-Stevens Point in a non-conference game on Tuesday at 7:00 pm and then return to league play with a series against Hamline next Friday and Saturday.
