Women’s Soccer Claims 5-0 Win Over Simpson College Posted on September 13th, 2009 by

The Gustavus women’s soccer team completed a successful road trip down to Iowa this weekend, winning their second game of the trip by a score of 5-0 over Simpson College. The Gusties defeated Central College yesterday by a score of 4-0. Against Simpson, the Gusties were led by Meghan McMillan who had one goal and one assist on the day. Chelsea Bayer turned away one shot to record the shutout. The Gusties move to 4-1-0 on the season.

Ashley Anderson got the game started off quickly for the Gusties as she put them on the board late in the tenth minute off of the assist from McMillan. McMillan recorded her team-leading fifth goal twelve minutes later as she found the back of the net late in the 22nd minute mark of the first half off the assist from Kenzie Del Santro. Just as the first half was coming to an end, Bekka Steinwand knocked one past the keeper with the assist from Meghan Zenner at 44:57.

Gustavus kept up the defensive intensity during the second half, limiting Simpson to only five shots in the half, and seven for the game. During the 66nd minute, Rachel Iblings scored off of the left wing on a free kick to push the Gustie lead to 4-0. Later in the game, Becca Hagen chipped in a goal of her own off of a penalty kick to score the final Gustavus goal. With 25 goals on the year through five games, the Gusties are off to a strong start offensively. Defensively, Gustavus has only allowed one goal all season, and has out-shot the opponent 132-36.

Gustavus plays next on Wednesday, September 16 at 4:00 p.m. against Carleton College at the Gustavus Soccer Field.
