The Gustavus men’s soccer team will face Whitworth University in the First Round of the NCAA Division III Men’s Soccer Tournament on Friday, Nov. 9 at 5:00 pm (Central Standard Time) at J.J. Keller Field in Titan Stadium in Oshkosh, Wis. The winner of the Gustavus vs. Whitworth match will play the winner of the UW-Oshkosh vs. Wartburg match on Saturday, Nov. 10 at 6:00 pm for the right to advance to the sectional tournament at a site yet to be determined next weekend Nov. 16-18. Gustavus, which shared the MIAC regular season title and won the MIAC Post-Season Tournament, enters with a mark of 16-3-1. Whitworth, which won the regular season Northwest Conference title, enters with a mark of 14-3-1.

Whitworth enters the NCAA Tournament as the champion of the Northwest Conference for the third time in the last four years and fourth time since 2001. The Pirates are led in scoring by senior forward Matt Friesen, who has seven goals and five assists this season. Goal keeper Scott Barnum has compiled a record of 14-3-1 with a 0.59 goals against average and he has posted 10 shutouts. Whitworth edged Pacific Lutheran University for the NWC title by one point as the Pirates finished at 12-2-0 and the Lutes at 11-2-1.

Whitworth edged Whitman 1-0 to clinch the title in the final regular season match last Saturday. The Pirates three losses came at the hands of #2 Trinity (2-1 in the first match of the season), Puget Sound (2-1 on Sept. 30) and Pacific Lutheran (1-0 in 2ot on Oct. 28). Ten of Whitworth’s 14 wins this season have been by one goal. The Pirates rank 15th in Division III in shutout percentage (0.61) and 21st in goals against average (0.59).

The Series
This will be the second meeting between Gustavus and Whitworth on the soccer pitch. The Gusties posted a 2-1 win over the Pirates in a 2005 NCAA Tournament semifinal match in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Gustavus in the NCAA Tournament:
This will be the Gusties eighth appearance in the NCAA Division III Men’s Soccer Tournament. Gustavus has compiled a record of 8-5-5 in its seven previous appearances. Last year, the Gusties defeated Loras College 1-0 in the first round and then lost to Wartburg 1-0 in the second round. In 2005, Gustavus advanced to the NCAA Finals with a first round win over Hope (1-0), advanced to third round by penalty kicks over Wheaton (3-1), defeated Loras (3-0) in the sectionals, and advanced to the Finals by defeating Fredonia (2-0). At the NCAA Finals, Gustavus defeated Whitworth 2-1 before losing to Messiah 1-0 in the championship match.


Gustavus Tournament Notes:

The Gusties will be making their fifth consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance (dating back to 2003) and their eighth overall appearance in the national tournament. Gustavus is 8-5-5 overall in NCAA tournament play and 6-0-1 in the first round.

Gustavus has allowed 8 goals in 22 post-season matches with 14 shutouts since 2003.

Gustavus won its second consecutive MIAC Post-Season Championship by defeating St. Olaf 2-0 Saturday in St. Peter and earned an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. Gustavus has now won four of the five MIAC Post-Season Tournaments since the format was adopted in 2003. The Gusties have an all-time MIAC Playoff record of 8-0-1.

Gustavus is 16-0-0 when scoring the first goal in a match this season and has not won when opponent has scored the first goal.

Gustavus has outscored its opponents 12-5 in the first half of a match this season and 21-4 in the second half. The Gusties have been shutout only once this season and that happened in a 2-0 loss to UW-Oshkosh on September 9 in Oshkosh, Wis.

Gustavus ranks third in Division III with a shutout percentage of 0.78. The Gusties have recorded 14 shutouts this season.

The three goals scored by UC-Santa Cruz on October 20 were the most allowed by the Gusties since 2001.

Senior forward Mike Butterworth has scored 14 goals and recorded three assists this season. Butterworth now ranks 10th on the all-time scoring list at Gustavus with 25 goals and 15 assists for 65 points. He leads the team with six game-winning goals.

Butterworth is currently on a three-match goal-scoring streak. He had a five-match goal-scoring streak earlier in the season from Sept. 29-Oct. 10.

Sophomore forward Bret Vander Streek, a Division I transfer from St. Francis, has scored four game-winning goals this season. Three of the four goals came in the last week of the season. He scored the game-winning goals against Macalester, St. Thomas (in the MIAC Playoff Semifinal) and St. Olaf (in the MIAC final).

Gustavus was the first men’s soccer program in MIAC history to reach 400 wins when the Gusties defeated Bethel 1-0 on Oct. 13.

Goalkeeper Trevor Brown is second in Division III with a 0.289 goals against average and third in save percentage (0.915). Brown was the last statistically eligible goalkeeper to allow a goal in Division III this season on October 7 vs. UW-Whitewater. Brown did not allow a goal in MIAC regular season play this year. He is the third goalkeeper in league history to accomplish this feat.
