Women’s Tennis Pushes Record to 21-4 With 9-0 Win Over Carleton Posted on April 22nd, 2006 by

The Gustavus women’s tennis team moved to 21-4 overall, 7-0 in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with a 9-0 win over Carleton College Saturday afternoon in St. Peter. Five different Gusties recorded wins in both singles and doubles during the dual.

The Gusties swept all three doubles matches with seniors Tara Houlihan (Sioux Falls, S.D.) and Lyndsey Palen (Rochester, Minn.) winning 8-3 at No. 1 doubles, senior Marla Menne (White Bear Lake, Minn.) and junior Jaime Gaard (Edina, Minn.) winning 8-0 at No. 2 doubles and junior Hannah Frericks (Sartell, Minn.) and sophomore Alex Burleigh (Verona, Wis.) winning 8-6 at No. 3 doubles.

Houlihan, Gaard, Menne and Frericks each posted straight set wins in singles, while Palen needed a third and decisive set to defeat Abby Beggs 6-1, 6-7 (3), 10-3 at No. 2 singles. Sophomore Jenny Arnfelt (Arden Hills, Minn.) replaced Burleigh in the singles line-up and posted a 6-2, 6-4 win over Lisa Ottum at No. 6 singles.

The Gusties will close out its regular season dual schedule on the road with matches against St. Kate’s and Hamline Sunday before finishing with a dual against St. Olaf Monday. Gustavus will host the 2006 MIAC Women’s Tennis Championships next weekend.
