Women’s Hockey Claims MIAC Title Outright with 4-0 Win Over Saint Benedict Posted on February 24th, 2006 by

The Gustavus women’s hockey team defeated the College of Saint Benedict 4-0 in Saint Cloud on Friday night to improve its season record to 19-3-2. With the win, the Gusties claimed their second consecutive MIAC regular season title. Abby Randall led the Gusties with two goals.

Forward Laura Vanelli gave the Gusties a 1-0 with a goal at the 11:23 mark of the first period. The assist was credited to Jessica Doig.

Gustavus extended its lead to 2-0 on a power play goal by Abby Randall just :50 seconds into the second period. An assist was credited to Kelly Crandall. The Gusties led 2-0 through two periods.

In the third period, Gustavus pulled away with goals by Jaclyn Dufault at the 2:56 mark and another goal by Abby Randall at the 11:16 mark. Christine Wicker and Molly Doyle picked up assists on the Dufault goal, while Andrea Peterson and Margaret Dorer registered assists on the second Randall goal. The Gusties held a 39-18 edge in shots in the game.

Kitty Hurley picked up the win in the nets for Gustavus as she stopped 15 shot in just over 51 minutes of play. Sophomore Danielle Koopman played the final eight minutes and made three saves.

Gustavus will close out the regular season by hosting Saint Benedict on Saturday night at 7:00 pm.
