The Gustavus women’s Nordic ski team wrapped up its 2006 season with a third-place team finish at the Central Collegiate Ski Association Regional Championships last weekend (Feb. 17-18) hosted by Michigan Tech University in Houghton, Mich. The Gusties (108 points overall) finished behind Alaska-Fairbanks (146) and Northern Michigan (137). Gustavus picked up third place finishes in both the Classic and Freestyle disciplines, as Alaska-Fairbanks swept both team races, followed closely by Northern Michigan.

Chandra Daw (Sr., Duluth, Minn.) led the Gusties in Saturday’s 5K Classic race, placing tenth with a 19:20.1 clocking. Laura Edlund (So., Forest Lake, Minn.) was next across the line with a 15th-place time of 19:42.0. Kathleen DeWahl (So., St. Paul, Minn.) and Sarah Willis (So., Willmar, Minn.) added top-20 finishes for Gustavus, placing 19th and 20th, respectively.

In Sunday’s 10K Freestyle race, Daw crossed the line ninth overall in a time of 32:40.9 to take the honor as the first Gustie across the line. Edlund added an 18th-place time of 34:50.4, while DeWahl skiied to a 21st-place finish in a 35:04.6 clocking.

The CCSA Regional Championships served as the fifth and final qualifying competition for the 2006 NCAA National Collegiate Skiing Championships this March in Steamboat Springs, Colo. Daw finished seventh in the final CCSA qualification points list, the final spot that qualifies for nationals.
