Gustavus Men’s Soccer Extends Unbeaten Streak to 26 Posted on September 28th, 2004 by

The fifth-ranked Gustavus men’s soccer team defeated St. Mary’s 3-0 on Tuesday afternoon in St. Peter, Minn. The Gusties extend their unbeaten streak to 26 (19 wins, seven ties), which sets a school record. The record of 25 unbeaten games was set in the first three seasons of the soccer program (1968-1970).

Caleb Bousu scored the the first goal of the match at minute 25 with a chip shot over the keeper from 40-yards out. Three minutes later Bousu split the Cardinal defense with a pass to Matt Broin. Broin fired a shot into the lower right corner to give the Gusties a two goal lead before halftime.

In the 70th minute Taylor Stein scored the final goal of match. Jon Astry served a ball over the Cardinal back line to Stein who placed the ball into the lower right corner of the goal.

Gustavus goalkeeper Andy Moulton made four saves to record his fourth win and fifth shutout of the season.

The Gusties are 8-0-2 overall and 3-0-1 in the MIAC and are ranked fifth nationally and first in the West Region by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA). Gustavus will host Carleton College on Saturday and travel to Decorah, Iowa on Sunday to play Luther College.

The Cardinals fall to 1-5-2 overall and 0-3-0 in the conference. St. Mary’s will be back in action on Saturday at home against Concordia College.
