Women’s Tennis Starts Play In NCAA Individual Tournament Posted on May 15th, 2004 by

The Gustavus women’s tennis team began play in the individual portion of the NCAA Championships on Saturday. The tournament is being played in Memphis, Tennessee.

In singles play, sophomore Tara Houlihan won her first round match over Jennifer Lejb of Tufts, 7-5, 6-3. Houlihan lost her second round match to Carina Alberelli of Emory, 4-6, 6-7 (3). Lauren Hom also played in the singles tournament. Hom lost her first round match to Lindsay Hagerman of Washinton and Lee, 1-6, 0-6.

Houlihan teamed with Lyndsey Palen in the doubles tournament. The #2 doubles team of Hom and Kara Smiley also qualified for the tournament. The Gusties managed to pick up a couple of wins as Palen and Houlihan defeated Jennifer Luten/Jennifer Lejb (Tufts), 6-3, 6-4 and Smiley and Hom upset second seeded Rachel Holt and Tristan Hedrick of Amherst, 7-6, 1-6, 6-3. Both teams advance to the quarterfinals which will be played on Sunday afternoon.
