Baseball Falls to MSU, Mankato, 7-1 Posted on May 3rd, 2004 by

The Gustavus baseball team lost to MSU, Mankato 7-1 on Wednesday afternoon in St. Peter. The Mavericks scored single runs in the first, third, fourth and fifth innings, before breaking the game open with three runs in the top of the seventh. The Gusties scored their lone run in the fifth inning. Minnesota State improves to 33-16, while Gustavus falls to 21-13.

The Gusties were led by senior second baseman Bryant Rogness who picked up two hits in four at-bats and drove in the lone Gustavus run. Freshman pitcher Ben Levy suffered the loss on the mound allowing five earned runs in six and two-thirds innings of work.

Mankato was led by Eric Austvold and Scott Kemp who recorded two hits each. Marc Dolenc started on the mound and pitched three innings without allowing a run. Jon Dudycha, Justin Dering and Kevin Dixon each pitched two innings the rest of the way for the Mavericks.

The Mavericks swept the season series from the Gusties claiming a 18-6 win on April 1 before posting the 7-1 win this afternoon.

Gustavus will host Hamline in an important MIAC doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 pm, while MSU will begin play in the NCC tournament on Thursday in Grand Forks against North Dakota State.
