Men’s Basketball Defeats Thomas More 84-72 in Whitworth Hawaiian Classic Posted on December 21st, 2003 by

Honolulu, Hawaii — After a tightly played first half, Gustavus took control in the second half on the way to an 84-72 win over Thomas More (Crestview Hills, Ky.) at the Whitworth College Hawaiian Classic held in McCabe Gym on the campus of Chaminade University.

Gustavus (5-3) shot 68% (19/28) in the second half to pull away from a 31-31 tie. Tim Brown scored 13 of his 18 points in the second half to lead the charge. John Whippler came off of the bench to lead GAC with 20 points and Chris TeBrake added 11 points.

The Gusties turned a 48-45 lead into a 60-45 advantage with 6:53 to play. GAC extended the lead to 18 points (69-51) before the Saints (2-5) pulled back to within 78-68 on a three-point play by Craig Russell. But only 1:22 remained in the game.

Marcus Johnson scored 16 points to lead Thomas More, while Russell scored 15 points and Andrae Woodard finished with 13.

Gustavus Adolphus, the 2003 NCAA Division III runner-up, finished the Whitworth Hawaiian Classic with a 1-1 record after dropping a heartbreaking 80-79 loss against defending NAIA Division I champion Concordia on Saturday.
