Men’s Golf Finishes Second at Gordin Collegiate Classic Posted on October 13th, 2003 by

The Gustavus men’s golf team placed second at the Gordin Collegiate Classic at Deer Track Golf and Country Club in Surfside Beach, South Carolina. The exclusive tournament includes the top twelve Division III teams from the previous year’s national tournament. Gustavus posted a 36-hole total of 293-295-588 (+12) to finish 11 strokes behind tournament champion St. John’s University which fired a total of 285-292-577 (+1). Gustavus, w hich entered the tournament ranked fourth in the nation, finished ahead of top-ranked Methodist (third), second-ranked Oglethorpe (11th), and third-ranked Ohio Wesleyan (fourth).

Individually, Gustavus was led by senior Luke Benoit. Benoit finished fifth with a score of 72-72-144 (Even par). Freshman Chase Thonvold finished 10th at 73-73-146 (+2), while senior Neil Johnson placed 14th at 73-74-147 (+3). Others scoring for Gustavus included sophomore Brady Hoffman who finished 31st at 75-77-152 (+8) and senior Brent Borgstahl who placed 42nd at 79-76-155 (+11).

The second place finish at the Gordin Collegiate Classic was the best in 13 appearances for the Gusties. The previous best finish was third in 1992.
