Gustavus to Host ITA Midwest Regional Posted on July 16th, 2003 by

The Gustavus women’s tennis team will once again host the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Fall Midwest Regional Championships this September 26-28. The Gustie duo of Lyndsey Palen and Kara Smiley will attempt to defend their doubles regional title.

Gustavus is coming off yet another highly successful spring season. The Gusties qualified for the NCAA Team Championship for the 15th year in a row. Gustavus was knocked out of the tournamnet by Emory, the eventual national champions. Palen and Smiley earned All-America honors by qualifying for the national doubles tournament.

The Gusties, who were ranked 10th nationally in the final ITA poll last season, won their 12th consecutive MIAC Championship last spring. The squad has now won 127 consecutive conference matches in a row.

The three-day ITA Regional will feature many of the top players from around the Midwest. The singles and doubles regional tournament determines which athletes move on to the national ITA National Championships in Corpus Christi, Texas.
