Amanda Parker Named Verizon Academic All-American Posted on June 20th, 2003 by

(St. Peter, Minn., June 19, 2003) — Gustavus Adolphus College gymnast Amanda Parker has been named to the 2003 Verizon Academic All-America College Division Women’s At-Large Second Team. The College Division squads are selected from NCAA II and III and the NAIA.

Parker, a sophomore from Ames, Iowa, finished second in the floor exercise and third in the vault competition at the National Collegiate Gymnastics Association Championships in March. She also placed sixth in the all-around competition. Parker boasts a 3.977 grade point average and is majoring in political science. She was a first team all-American on a squad that finished fourth at the national meet. Parker was the 2002 Division III national all-around champion and Honda Award winner as the Division III gymnast of the year.

The Verizon Academic All-America® Teams are selected by a vote of the 1,800-member College Sports Information Directors of America. To be eligible, an athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve and maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.20 on a scale of 4.00. Sports information directors nominate eligible athletes from their schools who are named to district teams prior to being voted upon the national level. CoSIDA has been selecting Academic All-America® Teams since 1952.
